Good communication is essential for quality patient-centered care. By using professional interpreters, you enable your patients to receive the same level of care, ensuring that both parties are participating fully.
Title VI of the Civil rights Act requires all healthcare institutions that accept federal funds to provide interpreting services for all patients with limited English proficiency. And as of 2021, it is an Oregon Health Authority incentive metric.
Who is NOT an appropriate choice for an Interpreter? Friends, family members, anyone who has not demonstrated proficiency in both languages, anyone who has not received training in interpretation, anyone who does not understand ethics and interpreting practices.
ODS offers free interpreting services for all members. Services are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
Plan ahead! Schedule an interpreter as soon as your patient makes an appointment. For onsite interpreting please schedule at least 48 hours in advance.
The “Request interpreter” form will be routed directly to Passport to Languages. Passport to Languages will process the form, confirm member’s eligibility, and reply to your request with a schedule confirmation.
Interpreters are scheduled based on availability. Please submit your interpreter requests to Passport to Languages no less than 48 hours prior to the appointment. Contact Passport to Languages at 503-297-2707 with questions.
